Child Space

SKB started designing high quality child-care centers in urban locations in the early 1990’s. Historically, the model child-care facilities were located in pad sites outside of the city center. Because of the demographics and professional lifestyles of the Washington, DC workforce, new approaches to child care design placing them within commercial office buildings in dense urban locations were sorely needed. SKB has been on the forefront of this model development, balancing the needs of operators, parents, licensing agencies, landlords and a complex web of life safety code requirements. The parents often work in very nice office environments and aspire for the same design quality for their children, adding another aspect to an already complex process.

Because child care design is such a specialized discipline that requires very specific expertise, SKB created a unique design practice group within the firm to concentrate on it. This is Child Space.
